Plot:
In the park, Charlie makes fun of a couple who are trying to smooch. He sits on the same park bench and soon gets into an altercation. He keeps finding other couples hidden throughout the park. Another couple is seen where the woman tells her suitor to give her a present. He lifts money from a sleeping old man, but in the meantime, Charlie comes across the same woman and pursues her affection. The film develops into a war between Charlie and the suitor, in which Charley steals the watch that is suposed to be the gft and presents it to the girl himself.
Comments:
In this early film, Chaplin has the uniform - bowler hat and cane - but not yet a consistent character. He isn't "the tramp." He's variously mocking, impish, and amorous. Some of the bits are amusing, but the film doesn't quite gel.
