The Knack... And How to Get It (1965) directed by Richard Lester
Viewed on May 29, 1972
A young teacher can't make it with girls. The guy he's renting a room to is an expert, and he asks him for help. Through the attempt to seduce a young virgin working for the YWCA, their roles become reversed, and the lessee is left with his confidence shattered.
A strange, fragmented film. The touches are weird, but not always funny, and Lester's self-indulgence for any sort of tricky idea gets in the way of developing the themes of the film (unlike Help! which is just wacky.) The inventions here aren't always witty enough. Lester now seems more influenced by the fragmentation of Godard than the true comic zaniness of the Marx Brothers or Sennett.
