The Old Guard (2020) directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood Viewed on January 18, 2022
Plot:
Charlize Theron plays the head of a group of immortals who have spent centuries protecting humanity. They are being pursued by the evil head of a pharmaceutical company (Harry Melling) who wants to discover (and sell) the secret to immortality. Things get complicated when a new immortal is discovered, an American soldier (KiKi Layne), who reluctantly joins the team, and winds up saving the day.
Commentary:
This is a satisfying feminist take on the superhero genre. The action sequences are well-staged, and there is enough character development to give the film some emotional depth. Charlize Theron kicks ass. The film ends with an obvious tease for a sequel. I hope it comes.
